WELCOME TO NEW ZEALAND!
Hello, everyoneπ
Today, we are going to talk about new Englishes! What do we mean by “new Englishes”? Well, it refersto different varieties of the English language used in places where it is not the mother tongue of the majority of the population.
We, English teachers, have to ask ourselves a question: are we going to teach our students just British and American due to its imperialism and significance in today’s world? Or are we going to show them the whole picture and the existence of other Englishes? If your answer is the second one, please keep reading this post.
There are numerous varieties, such as Jamaican, Nigerian, Indian, etc.; but here we are going to focus on the New Zealand one.
These are a frew activities that English teachers can implement with their students to learn some vocabulary and expressions of MaorΓ, the language of New Zealand.
→ Pre-task: vocabulary presentation
This pre-task is a warm-up activity since it serves as an introduction to the topic. To do so, the teacher will show a video of two girls from England and New Zealand presenting some vocabulary items in their own variety. The students are expected to listen carefully to the video as well as to take some notes of the words because they will use them later. The overall objective for students is to establish meaning correspondence.
→ Main task: reading comprehension
Students will be provided with a text in which some words will be in bold. They will also have a table with some words which are geographical synonyms of the words highlighted in the text. What they have to do is to substitute the British word by the Kiwi word.
→ Post-task: Quizlet
It is allowed to use electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets in order to carry out this quiz activity. Students will access to Quizlet through a password which will be given to them. Then, they will be randomly divided into several groups and the game will start. Each member of the group will have three words different from the rest of their mates. They will be provided with a definition and all the members of the group have to look for the word that corresponds to this definition and only one member will have it. If they choose an incorrect word, they will have to start the game again. The group that finishes first, wins.
